THE O MAHONY SOCIETY

1997 Washington D.C. Get-Together

The Phoenix Park Hotel - stands in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol, in the heart of monumental Washington. It is a shining bastion of Gaelic hospitality and Irish charm, and the perfect setting for our 1997 O Mahony Get-Together.

Saturday, some chose to tour the White House, which featured a tour of the Gardens, with the US military band playing in the background. Surrounding the gardens were various historical photographs, some depicting the many tree plantings and their significance. After admiring beautiful gardens, we were allowed to walk through parts of the White House, as this was a special tour, offered only twice per year. Others spent their time exploring through the Smithsonian, touring the Capital, the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln monuments, and/or Arlington Cemetery, etc. -- so much to do in D.C.

We all met for Dinner at the Phoenix Saturday night which featured salmon a Dingle or steak. At some point during dinner, it became noticeably quiet. There was a small gathering in the center of the dining room. Most heads were turned in that direction. We witnessed Brian Smith on bended knee clasping Kelly Mahoney's hands. A very surprised (somewhat tearful) Kelly, nodded her head. Brian had just asked Kelly for her hand in marriage. Once everyone realized what had just transpired, applause filled the room. Kelly Mahoney and Brian Smith had just announced their engagement. Congratulations Kelly and Brian. Kelly is a Senior Program Manager for Sylvan Learning Systems, where she met Brian, Assistant VP. They plan to be wed in early 1999.

Following dinner, Louis Mahoney announced a special awards ceremony for several members for their tireless work and dedication in the Society: Eileen Mahoney McConnell, Chris Mahoney and Nanci Mahoney Huther.

Eileen Mahoney McConnell is a O Mahony Society Director and was our US representative for many years. She also processed membership applications and collected monies. Accepting the beautiful embossed silver plate were her two daughters, Mary Haislip and Jean Dinwiddie.

Chris Mahoney was awarded a Certificate of Commendation, written in Irish, for her service to the Society in editing and publishing the Newsletter for three years.

Nanci Mahoney Huther was awarded a Certificate of Commendation, written in the Irish language, for her service to the Society in organizing the 1997 Get-together. Nanci is a Director for the Society and has been helping our members make travel plans to Ireland as well as the various US gatherings.

After the awards ceremony, Linda McHale, Master Dancer who danced with Michael Flatley when he performed with the Chieftons in Baltimore, demonstrated her beautiful Irish dancing techniques. Linda tried to do the impossible...give impromptu "lessons" to the crowd. To those brave enough to attempt the dances, we have it on tape and will be featuring you at the next Get-Together!
